OCT technology in Orillia

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive diagnostic instrument used for imaging the retina. It is completely SAFE with no side effects or complications. It has the ability to detect PROBLEMS in the eye PRIOR to any symptoms being present. It is similar to a CT scan which is used to image internal organs inside the body. The OCT uses an array of light waves to rapidly scan the eye (at a rate of 80,000 scans per second!) These scans are then analyzed and the OCT then presents an image of all the distinctive tissue layers within your retina. These layers can be differentiated and their thicknesses measured.

By comparing the thickness of the layers measured by the OCT scan against the normal thickness of healthy retinal layers, eye doctors can determine which retinal disease or eye condition exists in the eye, EVEN BEFORE the patient is aware of any problems.

With an OCT, your retina is most accurately assessed to ensure that it is in good NORMAL health, and to DETECT THE EARLY ONSET and the PROGRESSION of the top diseases known to cause blindness:

  • Macular Degeneration
  • Glaucoma/Optic nerve damage
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Retinal/Macular holes
  • Macular “wrinkling” and swelling (edema)
  • Central serous retinopathy (most common in 20-50 year-olds)

Using an OCT allows for early treatment in patients and dramatically improves the visual outcome of these treatments. The test is painless and only takes a few minutes. We highly recommend the use of this new technology as an integral tool to evaluate and clearly record and monitor your current eye health.
